From Client Needs to Code and a Shared Software for Hundreds of People

SataDiag is a public enterprise established in 2009 that provides diagnostic, medical, and equipment maintenance services within the Satakunta Hospital District area and several external units. SataDiag’s operations are based on the expertise of around 500 professionals in areas such as laboratory testing, screening, and hospital physiology-related healthcare services.

SataDiag’s collaboration with AtoZ began when Virpi Tunninen, the head of the hospital physiology unit at SataDiag, began considering whether electronic data transfer between different units could be facilitated in any way.

The problem was that there was no existing, ready-to-use system to transmit information to doctors, such as reports, test results, dates, and patient appointments.

“Previously, data was shared with dozens of people in a common Excel spreadsheet, and its simultaneous use, varying notation methods, the volume of tests, and disorganization made using the spreadsheet quite cumbersome,” Tunninen recalls the initial situation.

A Custom Software Developed from Innovative Interaction 

Virpi Tunninen first heard about AtoZ from a friend.

“I had heard about AtoZ’s software design, and after contacting them and describing our problem, we started defining goals for the information system: What should the software be able to do? What permissions should the secretary, doctor, or physicist have in the system? How can data transfer be ensured within the framework of data security?

Based on the planning, AtoZ quickly developed a web-based software called Tieto 2, which has been smoothly in use with us for about three years now. We can now transmit reports and test data to doctors on the other side of Finland within the same system, where each user has their own credentials and access rights,” Tunninen explains.

According to Tunninen, the software is simple to use and, as a result, significantly lightens the workload, having already paid for itself many times over.

“Tieto 2 has made our daily operations easier, improved the quality of our services, and has helped us meet the legal requirements excellently. It’s also very easy to manage the accounting, and no recorded information is lost, as all data is in the shared system, not in spreadsheets or, at worst, notebooks scattered around.

The best part is that we haven’t had to adapt our working methods to fit an existing software framework, but instead, Tieto 2 has been directly tailored to meet our requirements and work processes,” Tunninen says, satisfied.

Expanding the System to Cover All Existing Equipment 

Currently, AtoZ and SataDiag are developing a new, more refined version of the Tieto 2 software.

SataDiag uses a vast number of different devices, whose use requires continuous maintenance and quality assurance with varying measurements and intervals. These devices also have different legal approval or operational limits from several different professional groups. There has been no ready and unified software for these either.

“We started wondering if we could expand the Tieto 2 system to cover our equipment and its maintenance. Through joint workshops, AtoZ is implementing the agreed-upon goals step by step, and we can provide feedback and development ideas along the way. The goal is to have the software expansion ready by the fall,” Tunninen says.
