Why to test in a first place? - Creating Value through Testing

Creating value for the customer is the foundation of all business. High-quality software and flawless performance directly create value for the customer, helping companies achieve their goals and business objectives. High-quality software requires quality assurance and testing to identify errors. The correct functionality of the system must be ensured before deployment to production. The user should no longer be the tester. Poor-quality, slow-performing software with usability issues reduces the number of satisfied customers and may even lead to customer loss. In the worst case, poorly functioning software can also endanger human lives. Between good and bad code, there is life. 

When creating new services and applications, a genuine interest in meeting users' expectations and needs is paramount, while also keeping business benefits in mind. By involving users in the software design process early in the product development phase, they can influence and share how they want to use the software or service. For instance, by providing input on aspects like the user interface design, particular attention can be given to user-friendliness and usability during the testing phase.

Not everything can be perfectly tested. It is also a misconception that software is ever completely error-free. However, planned testing can help minimize the presence of potential errors. Risk analysis, along with the planning of testing and testing techniques, and the review of documents considering testing aspects, should begin during the software design phase. This approach saves both time and costs. The most expensive time to detect and fix errors is when they are found while the end customer is already using the software.

Initial Assessment

In the initial testing assessment, we investigate and address the following aspects:

    • Have all functionalities been tested?
  • Quality assurance reporting
    • Error reportingi

  • What metrics have been used to evaluate the effectiveness of the testing process?

  • Is it worth automating the testing?

The pre-study report addresses the following aspects:
  • Testing strategy
    • Who/What/When is being tested and in what kind of environment
    • Is it possible to enhance quality assurance during the project, for example, through better environments or test automation
  • Testing environments
    • How well do the testing environments support efficient quality assurance
    • How effectively can the correct operation of the application be verified in the testing environments
    • Is it possible, for example, to create controlled error scenarios in the environments
  • Automated testing
    • What functionalities can be tested automatically in the future
    • In what kind of environment can automated testing take place
    • What is needed to enable automated testing

The final deliverable will be a comprehensive report on the current state of testing and clarity on the future development of testing activities.
